the Cultural Atlas
The Atlas strives to make an inventory of the whole cultural infrastructure
in the “Lille Métropole” cross-border area and
the mining area of Nord-Pas-de-Calais.
The information that has been collected has been organised in 9
cultural domains : theatre, dance,
classical music and opera, other
music, audio-visual art and cinema,
literature, fine
arts, museums and activities
and sensitisation.
The following passages present, for the 9 domains, the different
types of cultural structures and facilities that are listed, as
well as their activities.
Theatre
Distribution
Specialised theatres. These
mainly organise theatre events, have a fixed residency and a permanent
technical infrastructure.
Un-specialised theatres.
These are partially equipped and receive regular theatre representations.
Pub theatres. These have
a theatre program.
Theatre festivals.
Creation and Production
Theatre companies. The companies
registered in this Atlas are all professionals.
Puppet companies. These correspond
to companies who have a regular public activity in this domain.
Distribution and production structures.
These structures have a creative, productive or a promotional activity
in theatre.
Training
Training for a diploma. These
correspond to diplomas acknowledged by the State (Fr) or the communities
(Bel).
Other types of training.
These encompass municipal schools or associations giving theatre
lessons.

Dance
Distribution
Specialised dance hall. These
mainly organise dance events and own a permanent dance mat and technical
pipe grid.
Un-specialised dance hall.
These are partially equipped and welcome regular dance events.
Dance festivals.
Creation and Production
Professional companies. The
companies registered in this Atlas are all professionals.
Distribution and production structures.
These have a creative, productive or promotional activity in dance.
Training
Training for a diploma. These
correspond to diplomas acknowledged by the State (Fr) or the communities
(Bel).
Other types of training.
These encompass municipal schools or associations giving dance lessons.

Classical
music and Opera
Distribution
Concert halls and operas.
These have fixed seats at their disposal and a permanent technical
infrastructure and, for the operas, an orchestra pit, and a stage
of more than 120 m 2 with a stage frame of more than 5 m high and
10 m wide.
Musical representations halls.
These are partially equipped with a technical infrastructure and
are regularly used by professionals.
Classical music and opera festivals.
Creation and Production
Distribution and production structures.
These have a production, creation aid or a promotional activity
in classical music and opera creation.
Orchestras and choirs are
those that are registered in the «Music domain».
Training
The national conservotaries and
national music schools (FR), Music Academies (FL) and Music Schools
(W).
School with a municipal vocation.
These correspond to music schools managed and commissioned by the
commune to offer training benefits to the population. These schools
can be administrated in public corporation and more rarely, under
an associative form.

These have a permanent technical infrastructure at their disposal
and a music programming team.
Un-specialised concert halls or
concert halls with a musical program. These are partially
equipped with a technical infrastructure and are regularly used

Creation and creation aid structures.
These are public, part government owned or associative, creation
aid and promotion of jazz music, rock, etc.

Private general-interest libraries.
These have a private status and correspond to «Libraries for
all» on the French side and more generally to other associative
libraries.
Festivals and book fairs.
Bookstores. Businesses whose
main activity is book sales.
Creation and Production
Reviews and newspapers.
Editors. Professionals whose
main activity is editing books.
Training
Training for a diploma. These
correspond to diplomas acknowledged by the State (Fr) or the communities
(Bel).
Conservation
Libraries with important patrimonial
funding.
Public archives. These correspond
to the archives of the local government and the State.
Specialised archives. These
are specialised in a specific domain (industry, religion, etc.)
and are either public or private.
Fine
arts
Distribution
Regular exhibition premises.
These are public or associative and regularly or permanently welcome
exhibitions which are either for sale or not for sale.
Distribution and sensitisation structures.
These represent the structures whose activity deals with promotion
and distribution of fine arts or the artists.
Art galleries. Their main
activity is the sale of art works.
Creation and Production
Gallery workshops. These
correspond to creation premises and associative and private sales.
Artist's residence. These
correspond to private creation premises, public or associative,
welcoming artists.
Training
Training for a diploma. These
correspond to diplomas acknowledged by the State (Fr) or the communities
(Bel).
Other types of training.
Elles rassemblent les écoles municipales ou les associations
dispensant des cours d'art.
Conservation
is taken up in the museums domain.
Audio-visual
arts and Cinema
Distribution
Movie theatres. These are
dedicated to cinema and have a regular program. These movie theatres
can be given the label "Art Cinema".
Video projection sites. These
regularly welcome video projections.
Cinema and video distribution structures.
These correspond to structures that program cinema and video.
Video and cinema festivals.
Creation and Production
Creation and creation aid structures.
Local TV stations. These
correspond to TV stations whose headquarters or permanent offices
reside in the cross-border Lille metropolis or the mining area of
Nord-Pas-de-Calais, including those who only broadcast on cable
television.
Training
Training for a diploma. These
correspond to diplomas acknowledged by the State (Fr) or the communities
(Bel).
Conservation
Film and video archives.
These are public or private.
Museums
By definition, these facilities mainly cover the two distribution
and conservation activity fields.
Fine arts museums. These
have collections of paintings, sculptures, graphic arts, etc. at
their disposal.
History museums and memorial premises.
These recall an event, the life of a person, a period of time or
a particular place. The major commemorative monuments are also included
in the Cultural Atlas.
Natural History museums.
Museums of industrial and technological
scientific culture. These correspond to the museums as a
whole and centres devoted to technology, industry and science that
have a permanent collection or organise exhibitions.
Other museums. These do not
fit into the previous four categories.
In France, these museums can be given the label «Musée
de France» from the Ministry of Culture and Communication,
which used to be «Listed and Controlled Museums».
Activities
and Sensitisation
Distribution
"Ad Hoc" buildings.
These correspond to all the premises dedicated to socio-cultural
activities (MJC, cultural or socio-cultural centres, ontmoetingscentrum,
etc.).
Specialised cultural centres.
These are dedicated to a culture or an particular activity (Goethe
Institute, British Cultural Centre, etc.).
Creation and Production
Distribution and production structures.
These organise socio-cultural activities, debates, meetings, publication
activities, etc.
Circuses. This category encompasses
all the structures involved in this discipline which cannot be considered
as activity and sensitisation structures per se but which have been
taken up here for practical reasons.
